Whimsical Living Room
Silver Spring, Maryland
After expanding their home with a new family room, my clients wanted to give their original family room new life—a space that felt like a destination, not just a pass-through. They envisioned a cozy, whimsical retreat with a hint of speakeasy charm. The room also needed to be functional for teenage dance parties and pet-friendly living, with flexible seating and easily movable pieces.
I carefully sourced fabrics and materials that offered both durability and easy maintenance, ensuring the space could handle everyday life while still feeling layered and inviting. As a nod to history, we used William Morris wallpaper, pulling from the timeless beauty of the English Arts and Crafts movement to create a space that blends heritage with a playful, lived-in spirit.
After wrapping up the living room, my client reached back out to design a dedicated entry space just outside the room. They wanted a thoughtful landing zone with fun lighting and a mirror to help open up the small area—setting the tone for guests the moment they step inside and creating a seamless, welcoming transition that complements the character of their newly designed living space.
