Earthy 1950s Remodel
Silver spring, maryland
This project highlights the transformation of a 1950s home into a functional and inviting space, reimagined for modern living. In the kitchen, we maximized the original galley-style layout by removing the wall to the basement stairwell, adding countertop space, and incorporating a full-depth pantry above the stairwell. Structural updates, such as installing a seamless attic header and extending the kitchen two feet into the dining area, enhanced the flow and usability. The finishing touch was replacing outdated vinyl flooring with white oak floors, creating a cohesive and refreshed look throughout the main level.
In the primary suite, we created a serene retreat by combining a small bedroom with the primary bedroom to add a luxurious en suite bathroom and a custom closet system. This clever redesign eliminated the need for a dresser, allowing the bedroom to feel more spacious and tranquil. The closet system includes abundant drawers and storage solutions for a clutter-free feel. Additionally, we cantilevered a bump-out into the backyard to create space for a cozy seating area overlooking the garden and forest. This involved significant structural work, including removing a nearly 10-foot-wide cinder block and brick wall with the help of an engineer and contractor. The final result is a spacious and private sanctuary thoughtfully designed for relaxation and comfort.
From the thoughtfully redesigned kitchen to the expanded and reimagined primary suite, this project honors the home's mid-century roots while adapting it for modern living. Each space reflects intentional and impactful updates, blending functionality with comfort. By trusting the process and making creative use of the existing structure, we achieved a home that feels tailored, harmonious, and perfect for today’s lifestyle.
